What questions does the FCE address?

  • Is the worker physically able to work (sedentary, light, medium, heavy and very heavy work)?
  • Is there a match between worker’s physical abilities and the job requirements?
  • What safety precautions need to be taken at work to prevent re-injury?
  • What modifications can be made to assist with return to work?

Why refer the worker for an FCE?

  • It is an integral part of the return-to-work process: The FCE identifies productivity levels and / or modifications of physically contraindicated work activities
  • It is a comprehensive and objective test of the client’s ability to perform work-related tasks
  • Subtests to assess physical abilities & limitations include: self report instruments; grip and pinch strength; hand coordination; lift; carry; elevated work; standing work; stairs & ladder climb
  • Safety is critical as it is linked to safety on return to work. The FCE focuses on safe maximum function (greatest safe ability in terms of frequency, duration or weight load)
